Installing the Factory Tech Accumulator TM

 The Factory Tech Accumulator

Congratulations on your purchase of our Factory Tech Accumulator for the 4R100 transmission.  These instructions will guide you through its installation.  Before starting, you will need the following parts and tools:

·          New transmission filter:   The factory style filter is available from AutoZone for considerably less than the dealer charges.

o         If you are installing the “4x4” deep pan, the Deutch Filter part number (AutoZone) is TF 325.  The Ford part number is F3TZ-7G186-BB.

o         If you are keeping the factory installed pan, the Deutch Filter part number is TF-350.  The Ford part number for the factory pan filter is F3TZ-7G186-AB

For clarity, the pictures shown below are taken with the transmission removed from the vehicle.   The installation of the accumulator in your vehicle will be the same.

Step 1 – Remove the transmission pan

If you are installing the “4x4” deep pan, you can punch a hole in the factory pan to drain the fluid.   After draining, loosen all the pan rain bolts (10mm socket) and lower the pan.

If you will be reusing the stock pan, this part of the job might get messy!  Begin by removing all of the bolts except those at the four corners of the pan.   Then loosen the corner bolts and let the pan fall a bit, letting fluid drain out from the gap.   When as much fluid as possible has drained, remove the corner bolts and slowly lower the pan.

Remove and clean the magnet at the bottom of the pan.

Step 2 – Remove the transmission filter

The filter is held in place only by a peach colored seal at the pump inlet.  Remove the filter with a twisting motion or you may use a screwdriver to pry it loose.   Be sure to remove the seal in the pump inlet if it did not come out with the filter.  A small screwdriver can be used to pry out the seal, but be careful not to scratch the sealing surface.   Your new filter will come with a new seal, so you can throw the old one away.

Step 3 – Locate and remove the accumulator.

The accumulator is the forward-most valve body

With the filter removed, locate the accumulator.  It is the rectangular valve body located at the front of the truck. Use your new part to compare.   It is held in place with eleven 8mm bolts and two 10mm nuts.  Remove the bolts and loosen the nuts.   About ½ quart of fluid is held by the “wormtrail” in the accumulator-slowly lower the accumulator to avoid a spill.   At this time, a small screen may fall from the separator plate.  Simply pop the screen back in and rotate it 180 degrees to lock it.  It will only fit in the correct hole.

Step 4 – Install the new accumulator

Now all that’s left is to install the Factory Tech accumulator.  Install it over the studs and hold it in place loosely with the two 10mm nuts.  Replace and finger-tighten the bolts.  Use your inch-lb torque wrench and tighten all the bolts and nuts to 80-100 inch-lb, working from the center bolts on the accumulator outward.

Step 5 – Install the new filter and replace the transmission pan

Spray WD-40 on the new transmission filter seal and install the filter.   The filter will press into the pump inlet and snap into place.

Install the magnet in the bottom of the transmission pan and replace the pan.  Finger tighten the pan rail bolts and then use your ft-lb torque wrench to tighten all the bolts to 11-12 ft-lbs.  On newer models you do not need to replace the factory pan gasket, it is reusable.

Step 6 – Fill and finish!

Fill the transmission by pouring fluid into the dipstick tube.  If your truck now has the deep pan, refill with 6 quarts of Mercon.  With the factory pan, refill with 5 quarts.

Start the engine and run the gear selector slowly though all the gears (including 2 and 1) and then return to park.  Wait 30 seconds with the engine running and then check the fluid level and add fluid if necessary.   Take the truck for a test drive, using all the gears (including 2 and 1).  I advise you to check the transmission fluid level the next two times you stop for fuel.

Congratulations, you’re done!
